Hello friends, I hope you're all well and have had a lovely Easter break! It seems like an age since we last sang together, so I'm really looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
Below is my feedback from our Spring concert, a load of information about the coming term, and a few other things for your interest. Thanks for reading.
Spring Concert Feedback
Well, what can I say except 'well done!' - I was absolutely chuffed with the whole concert, and you all should be incredibly proud too! Right from the beginning I knew the Parry was going to be excellent, because the way you all watched and connected for the opening of My Soul was brilliant. There was fabulous ensemble throughout, and we were able to properly perform it. I thought movements 1-5 were, quite frankly, perfect! I was particularly impressed with At the Round Earth's, which is such a tricky movement, and altos and sops shone with such courage in that really exposed moment. Movement 6, while not being 100% flawless, was equally impressive, I think. The longest and most 'bitty' movement, the hard thing was ensuring each entry was spot on; it was almost there! What I thought was especially wonderful was that from "take thy plague away from me", the tuning was absolutely perfect to the end... despite the fact we'd dropped almost a tone by that point... we ended on an immaculately in-tune D major chord at the end! I was over the moon with the Parry, and I cannot express my thanks enough for all the hard work that went into it.
The second half was wonderful too, filled with confident and classy singing, with a great sense of ensemble, blend, and overall musicianship. It was a pleasure to perform those pieces with you, and I was thrilled with the quality of singing. We had some lovely comments from the audience about how impressive the concert was, particularly the Parry. A huge 'thank you' to everyone who helps out behind the scenes. There are literally too many people for me to thank individually, because it takes an entire team of people to put these concerts on - without you we couldn't do it, so an enormous 'THANK YOU!' to you all.
The Spring term was absolutely brilliant, and I really think we keep going from strength to strength, developing as a group and continuing to put on excellent concerts. I'm really looking forward to our next term!
Poems
I had some great comments about the poetry read between each movement of the Parry, and a lot asking to know what the poems were and to read them again. Below are the poems Sarah read. If you know anyone also interested, please feel free to share with them.
Summer Term
Well, our next term is upon us! We begin again on Tuesday 29th April.
Our concert is on Saturday 5th July.
This term is another 9-rehearsal term, so we'll be singing each week apart from Tuesday 27th May which is Half Term week.
After the concert, Linda and Gerry have kindly offered to host another social at their house on Tuesday 8th July. Put this in the diary as it's a wonderful occasion, and more details will be shared soon.
Schedule
Here's the schedule for our first 4 rehearsals. Where possible, please come prepared with what we'll be doing.
Music
It's a great theme for the summer - love! I hope you'll find the repertoire exciting and engaging. Gerry and Linda will be handing out folders at our first rehearsal, but you can see my Marked Scores below in advance. In the printed scores, I've already marked up the Hagenberg and Brahms, so you'll just need to put the markings in the Whitacre and McDowall.
The order below is the order for the concert.
Learning resources
A few things to help us out with the learning of the music.
Spotify Playlist - as always, I've created a playlist to listen to. The only thing not on there is the Hagenberg, but you can find it (and everything else too) on YouTube. Listen HERE.
Learning tracks - incase you would like to use them, I've tried to find learning tracks to practice along with at home. Not all the pieces have them, but the Whitacre is HERE; the Brahms Liebeslieder is HERE, and the Neue Liebeslieder is HERE.
Translations - I've put together the text and translations for the movements of the Brahms that we're doing. Check it out below.
CNCS Conducting Workshop
On May 10th I'm running a workshop on conducting with the Chipping Norton Choral Society. It's open to all choirs, and will be a great afternoon learning about what exactly the role of the conductor is, and will include: understanding how to interact with the music you're reading, analysis and musical decisions, score preparation, and conducting gestures, all to help your work on pieces and improving musicianship.
Book tickets HERE.
That's all for now, I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

Hi all, I hope you're well and have had a good week. It was lovely to see you all again last week for our first rehearsal back.
Just a brief update for you all - the marked scores are now ready! We'll be getting the final pieces printed and to you likely next week, but the digital copies are below.
If you're using a tablet and would like the movements of the Parry as separate files, please let me know on Tuesday and I can send them to you separately.
Thank you for taking the time to put the markings in. I've tried to keep them minimal to save your time, but there are lots of important things in there, so please put them in!
See you all tomorrow,
Ben

Hello friends and happy New Year! I hope you're all well and had a lovely, restful Christmas?
A few things below before the term starts, but first of all I want to thank you all so much for your love, support, and generosity both throughout Bec's pregnancy and with the birth of Ezra. We've been so touched by everyone's kindness, and we feel incredibly lucky. We had a lovely first Christmas together, and Ezra thoroughly enjoyed spending Christmas with his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins!
Concert Feedback
In the madness that is Christmas, I never shared my thoughts on the concert we did on the 7th December. Well, what can I say other than it was absolutely amazing! I'm incredibly pleased with how it went, and the commitment and confidence everyone gave on the night. The second half in particular was outstanding! My absolute highlights were the Rachmaninoff, which was utterly spellbinding; the Beamish, which had a beautiful line and exquisite ensemble; and the Bruckner, which I found to be almost overwhelmingly exciting at points. Some of you may have seen Janet's thoughts she sent in an email, which I quote from now: "It was one of finest and most enjoyable of your concerts that I can recall. . . the sound of the choir was so immediate and well-focussed. . . I found the character of the choir's individual voices enhanced the communication with the audience."
I really do think it was the best we've sung, so let's keep up this excellent momentum for the next term!
Just to very quickly say thank you to James for his excellent accompanying in both the concert and throughout the term (along with his exceptional organ playing). Also to thank the Committee (both old and new) for all of their hard work behind the scenes in organising the concerts, and also the volunteers on the day who do all those jobs we take for granted - selling tickets and refreshments, moving furniture, putting up lighting - without all of your help we couldn't do this, so thank you!
This Coming Term
I can't wait to get started on our programme for this term, it's a stunning set of music. We begin on Tuesday 21st January and will be taking half term on Tuesday 18th February, making this a 9-rehearsal term. The concert is at St Michael and All Angel's Church, Summertown, on Saturday 29th March.
The programme is themed around 'Songs of Farewell':
Parry - Songs of Farewell
1. My Soul, There is a Country
2. I Know My Soul Hath Power to Know All Things
3. Never Weather-Beaten Sail
4. There is an Old Belief
5. At the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners
6. Lord, Let Me Know Mine End
Interval
MacMillan – A New Song
Gibbons – Drop, Drop, Slow Tears
Harris – Holy is the True Light
Dyson – Nunc Dimittis in D
Bainton – And I Saw a New Heaven
Elgar – They Are at Rest
Sullivan – The Long Day Closes
Paulus – The Road Home
Unpublished Encore – Arbo – Crossing the Bar
The music has been ordered, and as soon as it arrives I'll provide a set of marked scores which I'll share on here. I'll expect them to be in by the half term break so we can make full use of the rehearsal time we have.
A lot of it is in public domain, so if you would like to get ahead before the marked scores are up, you can find some on IMSLP or CPDL.
Rehearsal Schedule
This is my rehearsal schedule for the first 4 rehearsals of term. This will take us to half term, at which point I'll send out another schedule. I hope this helps with preparation.
As you'll see, the music is tricky, especially the last two movements of the Parry. Therefore, I'm setting a higher expectation for coming prepared this term. Hopefully knowing what we'll be working on well in advance will help with this.
Learning Resources
Below are a couple of learning resources, particularly to help with the Parry. Again, I hope this will help with the preparation at home; coming prepared is the only way we can improve as a choir. I expect to not have to 'note-bash' after our half term break, and instead work on the nuances and details of each piece.
Spotify Playlist (of course you can find all the pieces on YouTube if you don't use Spotify)
Parry Learning Guides
I think that's it for now. I'll be in touch again with marked scores before we begin.
I look forward to seeing you all on the 21st January for another fantastic term!

In Conductor's notes
Good afternoon everyone, I hope you're all well and have had a lovely weekend. Thank you so much for last week's rehearsal, it's always very important (and revealing) to sing through our big works like we did for the Mass, and it give us focus for our final rehearsal and our last bits of practice at home.
With one rehearsal left, and less than a week until the concert, please read the below notes carefully for an update.
What We'll Do - Tuesday 3rd December
Credo, Benedictus and Agnus Dei from the Missa O Magnum Mysterium
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Magnificat in A
Virga Jesse
In the Stillness
Concert Order
I always knew there would be a lot of music to get through this term, and we have accomplished a lot of it really brilliantly. However, I've had to make the difficult decision to cut a couple of works from the concert, so we can focus on what really needs work in the final week. That being said, here is the order for the concert:
Victoria O Magnum Mysterium
Victoria Missa O Magnum Mysterium (with brief introductions to each movement to allow for rest in between)
-Interval-
Palestrina Matin Responsory
Archer Creator of the Stars of Night
Poston Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Archer The Angel Gabriel
-Organ Interlude-
Mendelssohn How Lovely Are the Messengers
Bruckner Virga Jesse
Praetorius Es Ist Ein Ros'
-Organ Interlude-
Rachmaninoff Bogoroditse Devo
Stanford Magnificat in A
Holst In the Bleak Midwinter
Beamish In the Stillness
Lauridsen O Magnum Mysterium
As you can see, I've decided to cut Nova! and This is the Record of John. As well as ending with the Lauridsen, I think this creates a nice, balanced programme that we'll enjoy singing, and the audience will enjoy listening to.
Learning Resources
With less than a week to go, you don't need me to tell you how important it is to make sure you feel confident with all the notes in advance of Tuesday's rehearsal, as well as the concert day.
Please ensure you use this remaining week to brush up on the music using the Spotify playlist below, as well as the Missa O Magnum learning resources here:

Saturday 7th December
Venue: St Michael at the North Gate, Cornmarket Street
Rehearsal: 2pm - 5pm - I'm hoping we won't need all of this time, and in the forthcoming Committee meeting we'll discuss whether we need this much time on the day for future concerts.
Concert: 7:30-915pm - Ready to warm up by 7:15pm.
Concert Dress: All Black with a splash of colour.
Folders: Black folders for music not in 'Advent for Choirs' book.
I think that's all the information you need for the concert day. Any further questions please email me or Wendy D.
See you all on Tuesday for our final rehearsal!

Sorry everyone, I meant for this to go out yesterday - I did everything except hit 'Publish'! Oh dear!
Good evening everyone, I hope you're all well and have had a lovely week. Thank you all for attending the AGM last week, and a particular 'thank you for your service' to Wendy and Ann who are stepping down from the committee, and an even bigger thank you to Anne, Paola, Tom, and Eleanor for joining the committee!
A reminder that we do have a rehearsal tomorrow (29th October)! I'm very sorry that it's during the school half-term, but I hope to see most of you there. We'll be taking our half-term break the week later on Tuesday 5th November.
A brief one for you all today. Owing to the slightly-longer-than-normal AGM last week, James and I will be doing some more sectional work in the first half of the rehearsal tomorrow.
Creator of the Stars of Night;
Sectionals on Gloria and Credo from Missa O Magnum Mysterium;
Sectionals on Virga Jesse;
Sectionals on Victoria O Magnum Mysterium;
Tutti on the above;
Lauridsen O Magnum Mysterium.
Please make sure markings are in your copies, it saves so much rehearsal time! Here's the marked score attachment again:
Here's also the poster - please get promoting!

Hi all, sorry for the lack of Notes thus far this term; having said I'd be more on top of it this term we've had a few sudden bereavements over the past couple of weeks which have drawn my attention elsewhere - things will get easier once the baby is born... right?!...
A very brief one to say what we'll be doing on Tuesday:
How Lovely are the Messengers
Matin Responsory
Sectionals on Jesus Christ the Apple Tree (SA with James) & The Record of John (TB with Ben)
Sectionals on Gloria from Missa O Magnum.
Tutti on the above pieces from sectionals (if time).
A reminder that we've got our AGM and we still need a Secretary and someone to do the Publicity!
Please make sure markings are in your copies, it saves so much rehearsal time!
Finally, it was pointed out the Spotify link wasn't working - try this: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4rZU6uJh35VGZYPZwsDPq1?si=0733f550a89c442a

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you've had a good weekend and are looking forward to the week ahead. A brief update from me; as we're at the start of term there's not much to prepare, only to look ahead at what we'll be reading through in these first rehearsals.
What We Did - Tuesday 24th September (Rehearsal 1)
It was lovely to see you all again after our long summer break, and to welcome a few new members to join us. We read through as much of the programme as possible, only excluding Palestrina's O Magnum and Missa O Magnum Mysterium, and Chilcott's Nova! - We'll cover these in the next rehearsal. Some of the pieces we simply sang through like Creator of the Stars of Night, but we did spend some good time getting to grips with Ives's This is the Record of John, which jumps about between free chant and fast rhythms.
If you missed this week: You can catch up by familiarising yourself with the music in Advent for Choirs as well as the booklet provided (all in the marked scores).
What We'll Do - Tuesday 1st October
As above, we'll read through the O Magnum Mysterium and the Missa O Magnum Mysterium and then look at Nova! If there's time at the end I'd like to do a little bit of work on the Stanford Magnificat and Ives This is the Record.
Learning Resources
All the Marked Scores for the term are below. Once you've got your music please put them in! Having breaths, dynamics, and any other markings already marked in really does save time in rehearsal. Let's have a good term of high-quality rehearsing.
If you use a tablet, or have printing facilities at home, you may like to consider using the marked scores these ways. That way you don't need to put the markings in yourself. As long as anything printed is destroyed after the concert this is fine.
The Spotify Playlist is also available. Please use this as a tool to learn the music. All the music for this term is widely available to listen to elsewhere if Spotify isn't your thing, but I've shared my favourite recordings on this Spotify playlist. Listen HERE.
Please note that I decided to swap the halves of the concert, so the O Magnums will come in the first half, and the 'bittier' bits are in the second half.
Details For The Season
The details for the whole season are in my previous post, so please check them out there.
See you all on the 1st October!

Hello friends! I hope you're all well and have had an excellent summer break! It's been an age since we last sang together, so I can't wait to get going again on Tuesday. Please see below for all the information you'll need this term and year - thanks for reading carefully.
Feedback From Last Term
I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to provide you with the feedback from the concert! I'll begin by saying I think it was one of our best performances since I've been with you; I thought it was such an assured, clear and confident performance, and I'm so pleased with it. I've heard from many audience members that it's the best they've heard the choir, and was an incredibly enjoyable evening, so thank you all for your hard work to make it so splendid.
The Durante was an excellent way to start the concert... at this point I must hold up my hands and apologise profusely (again) to the Sopranos for not giving you your starting note! I think it must have been the excitement and adrenaline, but no excuses for a mistake like that - either way, you recovered so well, so thank you for not letting it phase you! The rest of the piece was stunning and a really enjoyable performance.
Well done in the Purcell - not much for the choir to do here, but it was a very committed performance and it didn't sound tired at all, which it could have quite easily become. It was light, stylistic, and complimented the soloists perfectly.
The Vivaldi was brilliant! I'm chuffed to pieces with how it went and again how musical and stylish it was. It was so nice over the term to spend time on blend, tuning, and thinking about excellent musicianship with it. It was a real pleasure to perform with players from the Adderbury Ensemble, and with our fantastic soloists.
We should all be proud of what we achieved last term, and in putting on a great concert (which has generated a few potential new members), so let's keep it up for the next season.
Paul, who supplied the organ, also kindly recorded the concert. You can hear it HERE.
Please note that this recording is for personal use only so please don't share it on Social Media.*
After our concert we had our annual social event, kindly hosted by Gerry and Linda; an enormous thank you to them for their very kind hospitality. I'm pleased to let you all know that we raised £140 from the event, which will be a great addition to the choir funds, allowing us to continue putting on high-quality concerts.
I hope you all also enjoyed the recent workshop with Janet - I've heard lots of good things about the success of the day from non-newCHOIR members. I look forward to having some excellent diction in our next rehearsal, haha!
Next Term
I'm very excited for this term, it'll be great fun to work on a lovely selection of music. Below are all the details you need to know about the term:
• First rehearsal - Tuesday 24th September.
• Half term break - Tuesday 5th. Please note that this is a late Half Term as I'm off for paternity leave (if all goes according to plan...)
• Concert day - Saturday 7th December in St Michael at the North Gate.
• If you were at the workshop last week you'll have been given your music already - if you weren't it'll be handed out at the first rehearsal.
I think those are all the details you need. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at the rehearsals. Thank you for being so understanding about the need for a late half term break.
Details For The Season
Here are all the dates and programmes for entire 2024/25 season. It'll be a great year together, so I look forward to all of these exciting projects.
Oxford Orpheus
I've been asked to share Oxford Orpheus's next project - Verdi's Requiem! They run a come-and-sing day and then the concert, so if you'd like to get involved you'd better book early as it'll be a popular one!
Check it out HERE.
I'm really looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow for our new term of music-making!

Good evening everyone, I hope you're all well!
Just a few things from me, echoing what Wendy M has already shared, and confirming all the information in one place.
This Term
It's been a good one this term, I've really enjoyed working on some more familiar repertoire with you all, extracting all those finer details and really allowing the music to shine through good ensemble, careful listening, and thoughtful musicianship; it has felt like a nice continuation of our 'mini-term' where these aspects took center-stage. I'm greatly looking forward to our concert tomorrow, and to bring it all together with the soloists and orchestra.
Concert Day
Some important things re. concert day.
Timings
As you'll see from the detailed rehearsal schedule below, I've asked you to arrive at 1:45pm in order to get seated. The rehearsal is 2pm-5pm. Concert is 7:30pm, so back in the church at 7:10pm ready for a warm up in the vestry.
Concert Dress
All black with a splash of colour please.
Concert order
Durante
Purcell
Interval
Vivaldi
After the concert
We'll be heading to either the Wine Bar across the street, or down the road to the Dew Drop Inn.
If you are coming to Linda and Gerry's BBQ on Tuesday, you can bring your scores back then - please bring the back free of markings! You'll have to do it at home, but at least you don't have to do it after the concert!
Detailed Rehearsal Schedule
Here's the rehearsal schedule for the day. There are so many different moving parts, so I'll try to keep this to time. But you'll notice that you get plenty of breaks, and should even be able to go early.
Marked Scores
Incase you haven't seen them in the WhatsApp group, and are missing anything in advance of the concert tomorrow, you can find the full Marked Scores HERE.
Summer Social
As you'll know, Linda and Gerry are very kindly providing a BBQ dinner on Tuesday 2nd July at their house, as a summer social. Any questions, talk to them tomorrow.
That's it for now, I look forward to seeing you all at St Michael and All Angels' church tomorrow at 1:45pm.

Hi all, I hope you had a lovely weekend.
We've had a great first couple of weeks this term, making good headway on all of the music. Below is a list of what we've done in the first couple of weeks. Please make sure you catch up if you've missed either rehearsal.
What we did on Tuesday 16th & 23rd April
• In our first rehearsal, we read through the entire programme, most of it at a steady speed. I think this is really important, to give us an idea of what we're working with for the term. We especially did a little bit on the text and the motifs of the Durante/Pergolesi.
• In the second rehearsal, we began with the first movement of the Gloria, working in great detail on tuning, blend, and balance, as well as ensuring notes were accurate. Some very good and thoughtful ensemble singing here.
• After this we looked at the Purcell, focussing on the choral section of pages 24-26. Again, some good ensemble and tuning work here, with minimal note-bashing.
• We ended with some work on the opening of the Durante, the "fecit potentiam" text, and the ending, finding the comparisons, practicing the text, and working on the notes.
To catch up: If you missed these rehearsals, please go through each piece at home with a recording, and try your best to sing through.
What we'll do on Tuesday 30th April - Week 3
I'd like to consolidate our work on the first movement of the Vivaldi, then look in detail at the 2nd movement. After this we'll do the first section of the Purcell. We'll end with work on the Durante, particularly the 2nd movement (Deposuit).
This evening (Monday 29th April)
If you see this in time, you may be interested to know that I'm playing in a chamber music concert this evening with a group called Crosswinds. It'll be an exciting concert, and is free to attend. Tickets are FREE and available HERE, and a poster is below.
Thanks all, see you on the 30th.

Good evening everyone, I hope you're all well and have had a lovely Easter break. Before we begin the Summer term I wanted to write to you. Below is feedback from the previous concert, the plan for this term, and the marked scores for some of the music. I can't wait to get going on this term's awesome programme.
Concert Feedback
An excellent concert all, very well done! I was hoping to get this feedback to you sooner but I came down with a nasty bout of end-of-term-itis, confining me to bed for a few days. This was then followed by a busy Easter, so thank you for bearing with.
The concert began with a bang with Music to Hear - It came across as confident and filled with fun, and I think the 2- and 4-part splitting at the start was very effective. There was some great legato singing in this too. Then The Singers kept the mood of the concert up. I was very pleased with the energy in this, and thought the text came across really well. Adding the piano I think gave us a bit more confidence with some of the entries in the middle and helped us maintain the tuning, but it'll be good to push for an acapella performance if we do it again in the future. It was unfortunate about the start of Sing Joyfully - we had got it a lot cleaner in rehearsals, but I think nerves got the better of us and the opening was therefore rough. When more parts came in it secured itself, and there were some lovely moments in this, especially the dialogue between parts and the conviction of some of the text - "Blow the trumpet" for example was great! The ending suffered slightly from nerves and being a few sopranos down, but overall it was an alright performance... let's focus on starts next term!
At this point Pete played, and I want to take a moment to say how wonderful it was to have him with us for the term! A huge thank you to Pete for his playing in rehearsals, excellent accompanying in the concert, and stellar solos. We're so lucky to work with such incredible accompanists such as James and Pete. An Die Musik was a solid performance, and the text which we'd worked hard on came across well. I don't know of any native German-speakers in the audience, but on the whole the text sounded convincing. There alway something sings was brilliant! On the whole the tuning was spot on, and the blend was lovely. The acapella sections were great and I really got a sense of the text. Well done. Then Music of Life went really well - not a challenging piece note-wise, but it has the possibility of being dull... it wasn't at all, and that was down to the good direction you gave the music.
Oh, how can I keep from singing was another fine example of acapella singing in this concert; blend, ensemble, and projection of text were all great - all things I've been nagging you about all term, so thank you for pulling it all together for the concert. Admittedly the tuning suffered slightly, especially towards the end, but it didn't matter as the performance of it was great! I hasten to add that it never sounded out of tune in the choir, the pitch just dropped... so good teamwork on that, haha! Finally, we ended the first half with We are the music makers and it was full of joy. It sounded happy, confident, and was a lovely end to the first half. Most importantly, no one came in early in that entry, so thank you all for that!!!
After the interval, we started with the three settings of Cantate Domino, and you sold them really well as a trio. I felt that the Monteverdi went even better than when we did it 2 years ago, and the Hassler was good too. The Gretchaninov, while being a committed performance, was a little flat in places, so that's something for us to bear in mind in the future, with post-interval pieces. Then the main work of the concert - the Serenade to Music. The choral sections were very good indeed, especially the opening and ending. The soli sections were great, and I know it was harsh of me to expect a top A from the sopranos at the end of a concert, but you nailed it!! Soloists: Nick, Simon, Wendy and Anne - thank you so much for such wonderful singing! It all came across incredibly well, and people were so complimentary afterwards! I'm so grateful for you all for doing those step out solos, and very proud of how well sung they were!
Overall, despite a few rocky moments, the concert as a whole performance was a great success. The choir sounded good, the music was challenging in its own way and you rose to that challenge on the whole, and the audience went away happy! Well done!
One last thing I must say is about the size of the audience... we need to ensure we get larger audiences than that! Not only do we deserve it, but it gives us the confidence to perform better as well as of course making what we do financially viable. I hope it's obvious that hiring an orchestra for the next concert is not cheap, so we can't afford to have a small audience for that! We'll need you all to work hard to sell tickets and push friends, family, and general punters to come!

I'm really looking forward to this coming term as it's going to be a big project for us! The repertoire is truly wonderful and we'll be joined by a top Baroque orchestra for the concert.
• We start on the 16th April, we'll be taking the half-term break on Tuesday 28th May, and the concert is on Saturday 29th June.
• Our programme is Durante/Pergolesi Magnificat, Purcell Come Ye Sons of Art, and Vivaldi Gloria.
• We'll have a professional Baroque orchestra for this, as well as 3 vocal soloists.
• The concert is at St Michael and All Angels Summertown, so a great venue for the concert!
I think that's everything you need to know, but I'll keep you updated if I've forgotten anything.
Marked Scores
The Durante and Purcell is below. I've not got the same edition of the Vivaldi as the ones we've hired so I'll get that to you next week.
I've done a new system with the markings, in order to keep them to a minimum where possible - anything essential is in red. You must put these in! Anything in blue is a nice addition but not completely necessary as it's hopefully a bit more obvious. Please put these in if you have the time. Thank you for putting them in, it really does save time in rehearsals having the breaths in.
If you use a tablet, or have printing facilities at home, you may like to consider using the marked scores these ways. That way you don't need to put the markings in yourself. As long as anything printed is destroyed after the concert this is fine.
Spotify Playlist
All the music for this term is widely available to listen to, but I've shared my favourite recordings on this Spotify playlist. Listen HERE.
Rutter Come-and-Sing day
I've been asked to share a come-and-sing day with the Oxford Bach Choir, led by the man himself! They've been waiting for 3 years for this date from him so really want everyone around Oxford, and beyond, to know about it. It is on Saturday 11th May in the Olivier Hall, St Edwards School, Woodstock Rd.
All information can be found on the OBC website.
I think that's all for now. Thanks for reading, and see you on Tuesday 16th.

In Conductor's notes
Hi all, it was great to see you all yesterday - we had a great rehearsal doing a lot of good work on those final touches before the concert on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to this one; we've done so much good work this term and it sounds great! A final push for work at home so it's as brilliant as possible in the concert!
What we did on Tuesday 19th March
• We began with the Gretchaninov Cantate Domino, thinking about blend, tuning and the musical direction (including the dynamics).
• Then we sang the Hassler Cantate Domino, and practiced joining it to the Gretchaninov, both being in C major. The opening locked in better the second time, and we practiced going from the 3/4 back to 4/4, with the tenors and basses removing the 's' in order to breathe properly and stay in time.
• We then did the Monteverdi Cantate Domino, practicing the opening and finding a light, bouncy, and well-phrased triple time. The legato section was great! We then looked at the different characters of the next sections, keeping it light and fluid without rushing, then very marcato, and making the end of page 5 a bit more playful and bringing out the antiphonal lines in the soprano parts.
• Then we spent a lot of time going through the opening (and D.S.) parts in Music to Hear, which felt a lot more confident. If you need to photocopy these pages to highlight your parts please do! After the break we went through the other sections of this, firming notes and ensuring rhythms are accurate. We also did some work on the 'slushy' section on page 4.
• After this we went through We are the music makers, ensuring rhythms were accurate. Please make sure you're happy with the rest last bar of page 31!!
• We ended with some good acapella work on Oh, how can I keep from singing?, making sure the ensemble is crystal clear!
To catch up: please go through all the pieces to make sure you are confident with them all.

Tickets and publicity
We've sold a few more online since last week, but it's not nearly enough! It's not too late to spread the word - it's important we keep getting good audiences for our concerts, and you really deserve a big audience for this one!
The excellent poster can be found on previous posts, so keep sharing it far and wide!
The day after...
There are 2 fabulous concerts you can go to, rounding off a music-filled weekend!
Firstly is the Chipping Norton Choral Society concert in Deddington Church, singing some choral jazz - Songs and Sonnets by George Shearing and Mass in Blue by Will Todd.
Secondly is the Cherwell Singers, singing music by Stanford.
Some of our members sing in these choirs, so please do go and support either group on Sunday 24th!
Thanks so much everyone, final push to the finish line now! See you all on Saturday 23rd!

In Conductor's notes
Hello friends, I hope you're all well and have had a good weekend? Thank you for your patience with Conductor's Notes this term, it's been a busy one with the launch of our Cotswold Youth Choir among many other projects, but things are beginning to ease off in terms of extra workload, so I'll try to be more prompt with these.
What we did on Tuesday 5th March
A good rehearsal, and we're grateful to Marcus, the New College Organ Scholar for stepping in to accompany.
• We began with There alway something sings, working in particular on blend and tuning of each section. We also ensured breaths and rubato sections were clear and together.
• Then we worked on the Tutti sections of the Vaughan Williams, blending the chords in the full sections, and going through the notes of the soli sections in the Sopranos and Altos. Please go through these at home too.
• After this we did some sections of The Singers in great detail. The opening is nice and precise now, which is great. We just checked the notes and rhythms of the Alto and Soprano sections. After this we practiced the change between page 6 & 7 - please look at this at home! Finally, we looked at the smoother, richer section, blending the chords well.
• Then we worked on Music to Hear, confirming the opening, and then looking at the first 'slushy' section, ensuring notes were correct.
• Finally, we ended with the opening of Oh, How Can I Keep From Singing, again focussing on the blend of voices and the tuning of chords.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look at the above sections, and make sure you're happy with your notes. At this stage, the notes need to be secure.
What we'll do on Tuesday 12th March - Week 9
As I mentioned last week, we'll be running the Vaughan Williams to get a feel of the entire work.
We'll begin with work on An Die Musik, followed by the Vaughan Williams. After this we'll work on The Singers, Sing Joyfully, and Oh, How Can I Keep. We'll end with the Grechaninov Cantate Domino.
Tickets and publicity
Please do keep promoting the concert! I'm sure you all saw Wendy M's post about ticket sales and publicity, and all agree that at this stage it's very disappointing to know we've only sold one ticket via Eventbrite. Do spread the word as it's important we keep getting good audiences for our concerts.
The excellent poster can be found on previous posts, so keep sharing it far and wide!
Thanks all, see you on the 12th.

In Conductor's notes
Good evening everyone, I hope you've all had a good weekend? I'm looking forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday. The concert creeps ever-closer, so thank you all for putting in the hard work at home.
What we did on Tuesday 27th February
• We started with We are the music makers, solidifying the rhythms and notes throughout the piece.
• Then we worked on The Singers, securing the opening, the bouncy melodies, and some of the richer harmonies.
• After this Pete worked with the soloists on the sections in the Vaughan Williams. In Tutti rehearsal we worked on the Monteverdi and Hassler Cantate Dominos, ensuring notes were accurate, the character of the sections was right, and the joins between each section were confident.
• We ended with some accuracy work on Music to Hear.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look at the above sections, and make sure you're happy with your notes. At this stage, the notes need to be relatively secure.
What we'll do on Tuesday 5th March - Week 8
We'll start this rehearsal with There alway something sings, before working on the tutti bits of the Vaughan Williams. Then we'll work on The Singers and Music to hear, running these if possible. We'll look at Oh How Can I keep from singing, and then, if time, run We are the Music Makers.
Please note that I'd like to run the Vaughan Williams next week (12th March), so please have that prepared for then.
Thanks all, see you on the 5th.

In Conductor's notes
Hi everyone, thanks for another good rehearsal on Tuesday, despite being a few down especially in the Altos and Tenors; a gentle reminder to please let Wendy D know if you're not going to be there.
What we did on Tuesday 20th February
• We started with Music of Life, ensuring we were happy with the repeated section, and working on a couple of tuning moments.
• Then we worked on Sing Joyfully, paying particular attention to how the parts bounce off each other, and locking in the style for each section. Really think about the fanfare-like style for "blow the trumpet" and then the legato "ev'n in the time".
• We then did a bit of work on the 3-part split sections of the Vaughan Williams, as well as the legato lines in the moving quavers.
• We split into sectionals to look at Oh, How can I keep from singing, securing all of the notes. We also did some sectional work on the Vaughan Williams, again focusing on the 3-part splits.
• To end the rehearsal we put together Oh, How can I keep thinking about the flow of the music as an ensemble, and refreshed our memory on There alway something sings.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look at the above sections, and make sure you're happy with your notes. At this stage, the notes need to be relatively secure.
What we'll do on Tuesday 27th February - Week 7
We'll start this rehearsal with We are the music makers, then Pete will do a bit of work with our Vaughan Williams soloists while I rehearse the Monteverdi and Hassler Cantate Dominos (or should that be Dominis?!) and the Hughes The Singers. We'll finish with Music to hear.
Vaughan Williams Marked Score
The new marked score for the Vaughan Williams is below, now showing exactly who is singing which part. All changes are in red pen. Please make sure these markings are in your copies for next week, thanks!
Fiddle Fingers
Later today Bec and I are heading up to Ripon to partake the Fiddle Fingers Musicathon. Fiddle Fingers is a youth string group set up by Bec's mum 25 years ago, and to celebrate this occasion, we're playing for 25 hours straight! They started at midday today, and will continue until 1pm tomorrow (we've got the nightshift while the kids sleep... yay!). This is all to raise money for 2 charities: Cancer Research UK and Ehlers-Danlos Support UK.
If you want to support this Musicathon, please consider donating via the link HERE.
Have a great weekend, and see you on the 27th.

In Conductor's notes
Hello friends, I hope you're all well and have had a lovely half term. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
What we did on Tuesday 6th February
• We began by refreshing the Grechaninov Cantate Domino, where we spent some time tuning the chords and giving the music some good direction.
• After this we locked in the chords of pages 9-11 of The Singers, before firming up entries of each voice part in the canon, and securing the rhythm at the end.
• Then we did some work on the German in An Die Musik, and made sure the parts were confident, especially when paired together (S/A and T/B, the A/T/B).
• We practiced the bar 69 onwards of Music to Hear, working out how the parts follow on from, and interact with, each other. Then we worked on the staccato section, before going through the wordless 'ah's on page 6 and 7.
• We worked through We Are the Music Makers, looking at the rhythms and ensuring confidence with notes.
• We finished with the ending of the Vaughan Williams, tuning those beautiful final chords.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look at the above sections, and make sure you're happy with your notes. At this stage, the notes need to be relatively secure.
What we'll do on Tuesday 20th February - Week 6
This week we'll be starting with Music of life, refreshing what happens in the piece, before working on Sing Joyfully, and the Vaughan Williams. We'll then split into sectionals to go through parts of There alway something sings, and Oh, How can I keep from singing. We'll finish by putting these together, and if there's time going through the Monteverdi Cantate Domino.
Vaughan Williams Follow-up
There were a few auditionees for these, and it's great to be able to give out solos. I was hoping a few more would throw their hats in the ring as this piece is a dream to sing. However, we'll be going through the non-allocated sections as tutti now, so this will be the focus of Tuesday 20th's rehearsal.
Marked Score
All markings should now be in, please don't let your fellow singers down by not having the markings in. If you still don't have them in, please go back to a previous Notes to find the score.

A lovely video of an original recording of the Vaughan Williams was shared with me by John in the basses - it shows Henry Wood conducting, and Vaughan Williams himself sitting on the steps following through!

In Conductor's notes
Hello friends, I hope you're all well and are having a lovely weekend so far. Lots of stuff below, so please do have a read.
Apologies once again for not posting Notes last week - with the launch of our new Cotswold Youth Choir this term, a lot of my 'admin time' is taken up with workshops and meetings. Things are beginning to settle down now, so thank you for your patience.
What we did on Tuesday 23rd January
• We worked on The Singers, securing the opening section, the alto and soprano solo sections, and then working in detail on the section in 3/2, breaking down the parts to ensure accuracy in notes and rhythms. We also looked at the character of the music, especially at Letter E.
• After this we did some very detailed work on the Byrd Sing Joyfully, really locking in the opening and finding the playful counterpoint between the parts. We also thought about the different colours we can create with the words, as well as looking at other stylistic points, finishing at bar 49.
• We clarified the madness of Music To Hear, making sure we all knew which parts we were singing. Please do check the marked scores to ensure you're happy with this. We also looked a little at the 4-part harmony sections on pages 2-5.
• We finished with some work on the opening of Serenade to Music, working on the tuning and blend of voices.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look through The Singers, the first part of Sing Joyfully, check Music To Hear (especially when you sing!), and the opening of the Vaughan Williams.
What we did on Tuesday 30th January
• We began with There alway something sings, working on the flow of the melody in the sopranos and the tuning in ATB. We gave the music direction in the TB/SA sections on page 10 of the booklet, going toward the ends of phrases. And finally we worked on the emphases of the last few pages, including the word "scum", the triplets, and the difference in the final few iterations of the text.
• After this we looked at Oh, how can I keep from singing? and by trying to find the melodic lines, build the structure of the piece. It was a bit note-bashy, but worthwhile in helping us understand our lines. We did spend some good time on finding the different characters of the music, and in securing the individual sections.
• We looked at the Hassler Cantate Domino, practicing the style of the music in its bouncy nature, looking at the relationship between the 2-time and 3-time, and then in some note-bashing to secure the parts.
• Finally we worked on the last section of the Byrd, from bar 49, again finding the style of the music, as well as securing notes, rhythms, and dialogue between parts.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look at There alway something sings and Oh, how can I keep from singing?, especially securing the notes to these at home. Also look at the Hassler and Byrd, making sure you're happy with the stylistic changes.
What we'll do on Tuesday 6th February - Week 5
We'll begin with a refresher of the Grechaninov Cantate Domino, then move onto the last section of The Singers, before trying to join the whole piece together. We'll work on Music To Hear pages 5-7, and after the break we'll look at An Die Musik, finishing with We Are The Music Makers and some of the Vaughan Williams.
Lots to get through this week, so please come prepared.
A reminder that we'll be having our half-term break on February 13th, so no rehearsal then.
Vaughan Williams Auditions
We only had one person(!) audition for the solos last week which is rather disappointing - I'd love you all to come and give it a go please!
As you know, there are quite a few solos in the Serenade to Music. I've marked which voice parts can sing which moments, so do look through them. Auditions will be held on Tuesday 6th Feb after the rehearsal.
I'll let people know before the half-term break on the 13th Feb, so that gives you plenty of time to practice. We'll then do some sectional work on those moments in the second half of the term too, so hopefully everyone will feel really confident with their solos!
Marked Score
All markings should now be in. Please make sure you're not letting the team down!

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you're all well and have had a lovely week. I hear that the rehearsal with Janet on Tuesday went really well, so a massive thank you to Janet for stepping in! Below is feedback from her (paraphrased) to help us consolidate what we did.
Meanwhile, I had a lovely time in Germany - we sang two sold-out concerts, performed for a fundraising event, and did some coaching with some young singers!
What we did on Tuesday 16th January
• Ayres: You practised the opening section a couple of times, familiarising yourselves with the group divisions the 1st and 2nd time. You ran through all the sections, drawing attention to the key changes, though details of the 5 flats and 7 sharps will need more work.
• Harris: Janet went through the context of the work and you ran through all of it. She pointed out the changes of mood as well as some of the less intuitive intervals which might catch you out.
• Byrd: You practiced the 'bouncy' style for much of the piece but didn't focus on the legato sections for this first go through. You semi-note-bashed bars 1-23 to help clarify the polyphony a bit.
Janet also mentioned the importance of some of the words, so this is something to work on over the term.
She ended her email to me with "It was fun to be back with them!" - overall, it sounds like a great rehearsal!
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look through the Ayres, Harris and Byrd, making note of some of those tricky intervals.
What we'll do on Tuesday 23rd January
We'll start with Hughes The Singers, followed by some work on Byrd Sing Joyfully. After the break, we'll clarify the start of Ayres Music to Hear, and finally, we'll end with a bit of Serenade to Music.
Vaughan Williams Auditions
As you know, there are quite a few solos in the Serenade to Music. I've marked which voice parts can sing which moments, so please do have a look through them. We'll be having two days of post-rehearsal auditions for them, so please let me know if you'd like to do any of them.
The auditions will be on:
• Tuesday 30th Jan (Week 4)
• Tuesday 6th Feb (Week 5)
I'll let people know before the half-term break on the 13th Feb, so that gives you plenty of time to practice. We'll then do some sectional work on those moments in the second half of the term too, so hopefully everyone will feel really confident with the solos!
Marked Score
Time to make sure the markings are in... we're coming up for week 3 now, so I expect these to be in now please, especially for the works we'll be covering in this week's rehearsal.

Hello friends, I hope you're well and have had a good week. It was so good to see so many of you on Tuesday, and I hope those who were ill are feeling better for next week.
What we did on Tuesday 9th January
A good first rehearsal back. As always, I try to get through as much music as possible so we see everything in the first week or two. Over the course of the evening, we looked at:
• Gretchaninoff - Cantate Domino
• Monteverdi - Cantate Domino
• Hassler - Cantate Domino
• Vaughan Williams - Serenade to Music
• Hughes - The Singers
• Schubert - An Die Musik
• Quartel - There Alway Something Sings
• Boykin - Music of Life
• Wright - We Are the Music Makers
We also had a brief look at Ayres Music to Hear, pointing out the splits in the music.
To catch up: if you missed this rehearsal, please look through the music above in the marked score below, and have a listen to as much of it as possible.
What we'll do on Tuesday 16th January
This week, you'll be joined by the lovely Janet Lincé as I'm off in Germany for concerts with Man(n) Singt! and The Acafellas. She'll be taking you through the remaining programme, and will then cover a few other bits if there's time. Please make sure you've looked at the below in advance for her:
• Byrd - Sing Joyfully
• Ayres - Music to Hear
• Harris - Oh, How Can I Keep from Singing?
Marked Score
As most of you have your music now, please do start putting the markings into your copies. I've already done a lot for you in the booklets, so hopefully this won't take you too long.

In Conductor's notes
Good evening everyone! I hope you're all well and had a joyous and relaxing Christmas and New Year! I'm so excited to get going again tomorrow with our new term. Below is just a quick 'head's up' for what to expect.
Tuesday 9th January
Our first rehearsal back! I've missed you all, and can't wait to get singing again.
Please note that the heating is a bit dodgy at the church due to various factors including flooding, so wrap up warm. We've asked for it to be switched on as early as possible.
This Term
We have a really interesting and varied programme of music for this term, all based around the theme of the joy of singing and of music, with a few works taken from the newly released ‘Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers’ which contains some fabulous pieces fitting the theme, and importantly showcases amazing music by underrepresented composers. We're pairing this with Vaughan Williams's stunning Serenade to Music, which ends our celebration of the gift of music.
The full programme is:
Bernard Hughes – The Singers
William Byrd – Sing Joyfully
Paul Ayres – Music to Hear
Franz Schubert – An Die Musik
Piano interlude on the theme of the programme
Sarah Quartel – There Alway Something Sings
B. E. Boykin – Music of Life
Robert Harris – Oh, how can I keep from singing?
Reginald Wright – We are the music makers
- Interval of 25 minutes -
Claudio Monteverdi – Cantate Domino
Alexander Gretchaninov – Cantate Domino
Hans Leo Hassler – Cantate Domino
Piano interlude on the theme of the programme
Ralph Vaughan Williams – Serenade to Music
The concert is on Saturday 23rd at 7:30pm with an afternoon rehearsal from 2-5pm, at St Michael at the North Gate Church, Oxford, OX1 3EY.
Marked Score
Please see the marked scores below. Some of the music is printed in a couple of booklets (thank you Gerry for getting these printed), so they're already marked up, but you'll need to do the odd bit yourself, sorry! Do have a look over this if you get a chance tonight, but obviously not a problem if you dont.
